Algorith

Algorith is a kinetic sculpture that uses kinetic energy in order to produce patterns of movement.
The sculpture consists of parts of machines that have been used in the traditional fabric production in Germany between 19th and 20th century.

Many thanks to the ‘Margarete Lorenz Stiftung’ & ‘Tuchwerk Aachen’ for making this piece possible.

WAXLAMP

This piece contradicts the concept of “form follows function” and carries also on deep psychological sentiments connected to the use of an item and to the philosophies of aesthetics and determinism.

What you perceive face value is a shape that resembles a table light cast completely out of wax. Attached to the Wax Lamp you find an electric cable with a switch. The Light bulb will radiate heat melting the wax around it allowing its light to aglow.

You can either keep the “form” or use the “function“. Consequently the concept of “form unfollows function” is applied.

In terms of philosophies of aesthetics one important aspect of emotionalism is caught up;
fear of loss.
The preciousness of beauty is defined by its finitude. The more difficult it is be kept and preserved the more precious it becomes.

This leads to the theory of determinism for the Wax Lamp.
Preserving or destroying is both a decision.

SYSIPHOS

“This is Sysiphos. It is a modular kinetic object. It offers endless combinations and applications only limited by the number of modules you own. Surrender to the irresistible attraction of various gear ratio transmissions.

You don’t need it, You want it!”

prices on request

material: aluminum, stainless steel, brass, plywood
year: 2010

Concept:

Sisyphos is a protagonist in the antique Greek mythology.
He has been doomed for eternity and is ought to recommence his work again and again and again.

The documentary “the story of stuff”, explains that each product passes a global process from extraction, to production to distribution to consumption and to disposal.

Our community steps in, in the steps consumption and disposal.
Consumption keeps the system running.

Media will never imply that you can be happy with your property and fashion.

This circle of consumption reminds me on Sisyphos.

We are embedded in a system, which is never ending. We work to spend money, to work to spend money again and again and again.
Products can reflect the endlessness of the consumption circle and the endlessness of Sisyphus’ punishment.

Perceived obsolescence:

This story of consumption and Sisyphus can be translated into a product.
Perceived obsolescence is the key.

Following aspects play a role in the development of my product:

– A series of products, which can be joined and combined in various ways. There is no end of the production line.
-The product has to be attractive. People can’t leave their eyes and hands of it.
-It does not need to be functional.

The Conclusion:

I want to create a modular kinetic object.

Each module can be connected to another module. You can always connect new modules to old ones.

I create a central module that provides the rotation and momentum in order to drive the other modules.

I want to create mechanisms and gear ratio transmissions, which have a similar attraction to people like clockwork mechanisms.
There will always be a free clutch to attach another module. So you can go on collecting them.

HAPPY TREE FRIEND

The Happy Tree Friend is inspired by the angle poise task light 1933/34

The aesthetic, emotional and intellectual connotations of the classic shape are augmented by application of naturally grown wood to draw a contrast between natural shapes and technical lines within one object.
Metal parts are powder coated. Their colour matching will always be specific to the bark of the tree wood used and will either compliment or contrast its colour.
This light object was created using gathered scrap wood void (in accordance with local forestry commission offices).
The material ages between 12 & 24 months before it will be processed and transformed into a light.

Each piece is equipped with a number plate that shows the geological coordinates of the donator-tree’s location, serial number and date of production.

Materials: steel, wood (e.g. robinia, maple or birch)

SNAPPY TREE FRIEND

The Snappy Tree Friend is a Floor light using gathered scrap wood void.

The branches are collected in accordance with local forestry commission offices and private owners.
Twenty-four months or even more are needed to age the branch before it can be processed and transformed into a light. The long time is necessary to avoid cracks in the vital areas where the hinge is located.

The most challenging detail is the movable head that can be lowered and is an integral part of the whole branch. The movement of the head switches the light off and on.

Each piece is equipped with a number plate that shows the geological coordinates of the donator tree’s location, serial number and date of production.

materials: brass, wood from deciduous trees (e.g. oak, maple, hawthorn, birch,…)
size: 175-210 cm height
light source: LED 9 W 24V
supply voltage: 100-230 V
Year: numbered since 2013

Little Tree Friend

The Little Tree Friend is a table light created using gathered scrap wood void.

The twigs and branches are collected in accordance with local forestry commission offices and private owners.

Between 12 & 24 months pass by before the branches are being processed and transformed into a light.

Tripod and strut can be adjusted to redirect the angle of the light source.
A brass hinge functions as both mechanical and electrical connection of the two body units, as it carries electricity to remove the need for additional wiring.

Each piece is equipped with a number plate that shows the geological coordinates of the donator tree’s location, serial number and date of production.

size: 40-75 cm height
light source: LED 5 W 24V
supply voltage: 100-230 V
size:Year: consecutively numbered items since 2013
